Blue Jays fans gave New York Mets slugger Jose Bautista a standing ovation before his first at bat as a visiting player since leaving Toronto at the end of last season.

The two-time home run champion took off his helmet and acknowledged both the crowd and the Blue Jays dugout as fans rose for a prolonged ovation. Bautista drew a five-pitch walk and scored when Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a home run.

Before the game , Bautista drew another ovation at the end of a video tribute featuring highlights of his 10 seasons with the Blue Jays, including back-to-back ALCS appearances in 2015 and 2016.

The six-time All-Star exchanged warm embraces with several former Blue Jays teammates during batting practice and signed autographs for fans alongside New Yorks first base dugout. Fans in right field rose to applaud Bautista as he took his position in the bottom of the first.

Bautista played 12 games for Atlanta in May and joined the Mets on May 22. Hes batting .250 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 36 games with New York.

The backup quarterback is a tough job in the NFL. You have to be a good guy and ready to jump in if the starter goes down and even longer if need be. It can be tricky as too many teams make the mistake of putting their hopes on the main starter and not realizing they need a good backup until its too late. Notably is that so many times Quinnen Williams Jersey , the backup takes over and ends up doing an even better job than anyone expected to the point that they become a much bigger star than the guy they were replacing. However, many other times , the backup shows why theyre the backup, not nearly as great on the field and the team suffers for it.It can be tricky as its well known how a guy great in college can falter in the pros and thus let his team down. But other cases can be a guy surprising by taking off better than anyone could have dreamed and becoming a starter themselves. Here are 8 backups who proved themselves top starters and 8 who couldnt live up to that position to show how tricky it is in the NFL.

In this day and age Garrett Bradbury Jersey , it's become paramount in importance that every team has a capable backup quarterback to go along with their starter. With the amount of injuries in today's game, a backup can feasibly be called upon in a moment's notice, and will be expected to execute any given team's offense at the same general level as the starter would. Needless to say, there are a lot of teams with sub-par backups at the moment, and they'll be looking for an upgrade in the near future. It's not often that the free agent market contains a lot of starting-caliber quarterbacks, but in 2018, there will actually be a mixed bag. Of course Noah Fant Jersey , it will be slanted towards the backup tier, but for once there will be a few starters potentially hitting the market. Let's take a look at exactly which quarterbacks will be in the conversation, where they may go, and what they project to be doing during the 2018 season. It's never too early to look ahead at the most important position on the NFL field.Ranked below are 15 NFL free agent quarterbacks in 2018 and where they may sign. J.D. Martinez and the Boston Red Sox keep piling up big offensive numbers not to mention wins against the Los Angeles Angels.

Martinez hit his major league-leading 25th home run, Rafael Devers delivered a tiebreaking double and the Red Sox beat the skidding Angels 9-6 on Wednesday night after squandering a six-run lead.

Boston (54-27) moved into first place in the AL East, a half-game ahead of the rival New York Yankees. After finishing their series with the Angels on Thursday night, the Red Sox play three games at Yankee Stadium this weekend.

The homer by Martinez capped a six-run second for the Red Sox , who won for the fifth time in six games. Eduardo Nunez and Sandy Leon also went deep in the inning. Boston improved to 5-0 against the Angels this season and has outscored them 45-10 with 18 homers and a .363 batting average.

Its the most homers by any club in a season series of six games or fewer, according to the Red Sox.

I dont know. Thats just what it is, really. Theres no one explanation, Martinez said. Maybe we just match up well against them.

Martin Maldonado launched a three-run homer and Ian Kinsler had a solo shot for the Angels, who lost their fifth straight and 12th in 16 games.

Los Angeles reliever Jake Jewell was carted off the field with what appeared to be a gruesome injury to his right ankle after covering the plate on a run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth.

Hes getting evaluated, I think, at Massachusetts General Drew Lock Jersey , Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. Hopefully well get an idea of whats happening sometime tonight.

Angels star Mike Trout went 1 for 4 as a sprained right index finger kept him as the designated hitter for the eighth consecutive game.

Devers doubled off reliever Jose Alvarez (3-3) in the seventh, putting Boston back in front 7-6, and scored on Leons single in a game that took 4 hours.

It was a weird game, slow pace, Boston manager Alex Cora said. Im glad we won the game. Not a pretty game to watch.

Matt Barnes (2-2) worked a scoreless inning. Craig Kimbrel got four outs for his 23rd save, his first of more than three outs this season.

The Angels trailed 6-0 and looked as though they were in line for another lopsided loss to Boston before they charged back with a run in the fifth on Kinslers homer, three in the sixth on Maldonados shot and two in the seventh.

We battled back and got in the game. Well keep battling , Scioscia said. But, at some point, obviously we need to put both ends together and get the pitching we need, get some early runs and get the game on our terms and were going to start to do things the way we can.

Andrelton Simmons RBI double off reliever Joe Kelly tied it.

Martinezs shot went over the Green Monster in left-center, raising his big league-best RBI total to 64. In his first season with Boston, the slugger has the most home runs in Red Sox history before the end of June.

Nunez hit Andrew Heaneys first pitch of the second into the center-field bleachers. Leon drove an inside fastball off a billboard above the Green Monster.

Boston starter Rick Porcello gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings. Heaney was tagged for six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Angels: INF Zack Cozart got a second opinion on his left shoulder after experiencing continued discomfort and plans to have surgery in Los Angeles soon to repair a torn labrum, the team said. Scioscia said two-way rookie star Shohei Ohtani (sprained elbow ligament) will be re-evaluated Thursday. Three weeks ago , Ohtanis elbow was injected with platelet-rich plasma and stem cells as he tries to avoid Tommy John surgery.

Red Sox: Cora said 2B Dustin Pedroia and knuckleballer Steven Wright will see Dr. Riley Williams III when the club is in New York to play the Yankees this weekend. Both are on the 10-day DL with left knee inflammation and had surgery performed by Dr. Williams. Maybe we can do something differently as far as the treatments, Cora said about Pedroia, who has played in just three games since offseason surgery. Drew Pomeranz threw a simulated game and Cora said the left-hander could start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

The Red Sox signed infielder Brandon Phillips to a minor league deal. The 36-year-old veteran has played with five teams over 16 seasons.

Angels: RHP Jamie Barria (5-3, 3.40 ERA) is slated to pitch the series finale Thursday. It will be his first career start against Boston.

Red Sox: LHP Brian Johnson (1-2, 4.50) takes Wrights turn in the rotation after he went on the disabled list Tuesday.

Thursday nights game between the Oakland Athletics and the Chicago White Sox has been postponed because of rain.

The postponement is the 40th in the major leagues this season , one more than last year and the most in at least the past six years.

The game will be made up on Friday as part of a straight doubleheader beginning at 3:10 p.m. CDT. The second game will start at 7:10 p.m., the time for Fridays regularly scheduled game, or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

The White Sox announced right-hander James Shields (2-8, 4.63 ERA) will start the first game on Friday Zach Gentry Jersey , with righty Lucas Giolito (4-7, 7.19) following in the nightcap. Chicago has lost seven straight to match a season high and is a season-low 25 games under .500.

Oakland will send left-hander Sean Manaea (6-6, 3.56) to the mound in the opener and start righty Chris Bassitt in (0-2, 2.45) in Game 2.

The Athletics are scheduled to play four games this weekend during their only visit to Chicago this season.

Nailing a fantasy draft pick for pick is nearly impossible to do. However L.J. Collier Jersey , draft mistakes are often quite avoidable. Fantasy football enthusiasts should have been well aware of the risk that came along with highly ranked players last year like Le'Veon Bell, Jamaal Charles, DeMarco Murray, Alfred Morris , Justin Forsett, and Peyton Manning. Despite the risk, all of these players generally went in the first four rounds of drafts.Drafting one or two risky players (especially later in drafts) isn't always a bad idea. Taking the chance on players like Doug Martin, Todd Gurley D.K. Metcalf Jersey , and Brandon Marshall worked out splendidly for fantasy owners last year. Of course risks don't always pan out, which is why it is important to avoid them for the most part. Many players are blatantly risky due to a rich injury history, a bad team situation, age , inexperience, or inconsistency in past seasons. There will always be a select group of players that a fantasy owner will resent for underperforming by the end of the season. It is unlikely that every single player on this list will end up being on that list, but the risk you took in your draft just isn't worth it with these guys:

The general philosophy of an NFL offense has changed course several times over the years. Teams used to run two-man backfield sets almost exclusively Nick Bosa Jersey , and that has given way to a more pass-heavy game, which features much more receivers on the field in stock formations. Our point is that the NFL is a juggernaut for high-flying offenses right now, and the 2017 season may end up being the most entertaining season yet, in that regard. There are some truly marquee offenses in the league right now, and then there are some that are absolutely abysmal. That's usually the case with every NFL season, except for the fact that we could see some middling offenses break out into top-tier ones this season L.J. Collier Jersey , and really hit their stride. With such a mix of veteran and young quarterbacks playing alongside dynamic skill players, it's an exciting time to be watching the league, and seeing which teams are able to take the next step, and start putting points on the board with the very best the game has to offer.Let's take a look at which teams are going to thrive on the offensive side of the ball this year, and which ones will crash and burn.Ranked below is every NFL team's offense heading into the 2017 season, from worst to best. The New Orleans Saints have placed left guard Andrus Peat and defensive tackle Tony McDaniel on injured reserve and added offensive tackle Bryce Harris and defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton to their active roster.

The decision to place Peat on injured reserve , announced Wednesday, has been anticipated since he was carted off the field Sunday with a fractured fibula during the Saints playoff victory over Carolina.

Peat, a 2015 first-round draft pick, has been a key member of the offensive line this season because of his versatility. His main position has been guard, but he has filled in at left tackle when starter Terron Armstead has been sidelined with various injuries this season.

Harris returns to the Saints, who have had him on the roster several times this season.

The Saints have not announced McDaniels injury. McDaniel , who spent part of this season with San Francisco, played in only the regular season finale and last Sundays playoff game for New Orleans and made or assisted on three tackles.

Hamilton, a second-year pro out of Mississippi, has been on New Orleans practice squad since Oct. 10.

Did you know that New York has people living outside of the Big Apple? Who would have thought? There are even inhabitants in the freezing western part of the state and yes , they are living and no, they arent stuck underneath snow and yes, they could all be abominable snowmen and snowwomen and snowchildren. One thing is for certain, its Bills and Sabers territory, and Winter is coming.I know, super intimidating, but the city of Buffalo has suffered through more than the cold for a very long time. Should I remind everyone of the 90s? No? Okay, I will. Led by Jim Kelly and Bruce Smith, the Buffalo Bills lost four straight Super Bowls from 1990-1993. That has to be one of the most depressing facts in sports history. All four losses came from the helmets of NFC East opponents, but since that conference is seemingly getting better than maybe its time again for the Bills to repeat as repeat losers. They made the playoffs eight seasons from 1990-1999 which is quite incredible. See, the New England Patriots havent won that division since the beginning of time.If you follow football then you probably realize it has been a steady decline from almost-glory to complete doom for the franchise since we entered the 2000s. The 21st century has not been the greatest for Bills fans most probably wishing at this point that Y2K actually happened but they are one of the most loyal bases in all of sports. Could you imagine the craziness if the team was moved to Toronto? Snowballs everywhere! They can stand the Blue Jays Josh Allen Jersey , but thats just because the Buffalo Hoary Redpolls (its a bird that lives in cold weather, and also has a funny name feel free to research) are not an MLB franchise as of yet.So lets go over the best and worst Bills since 2000 who have suffered through the losses, the cold and snow, and threats to move to Canada. Bring a warm jacket. Random trades are bound to happen in the NFL. Some players get traded away to other teams, while others are traded away just to make room for a couple of draft picks in the near future. And, in some instances, there are players who have been traded up on the draft ladder. Of course, there are some trades that work out in a team's favor (or in some cases both teams benefit), but like any other taken risk, there are some trades that make things even worse for a team. When a GM is making a decision for the team, they have to outweigh the benefits and consequences to ensure that they're going to make the right decision for the players and coaches , who will have to deal with the newest member of the team's roster. But, of course, they might hope for the best after making a questionable decision and the day where a player turns things around never comes. What do they do if a negative effect occurs? All GMs can do from there is look back at their past mistakes and learn from them. However, not everyone has the ability to learn from their mistakes, so there's that, too. We've seen more and more trades occur at a more frequent pace in the NFL. We've seen more trades occur mid-season, as the norm in today's NFL is to be aggressive, both on the field and in the front office. Here's every NFL team's most regretful trade involving an active player.
